On Thursday night, host Joel Dommett took to the stage to host the NTAs for the very first time. Over the course of the night, a number of famous faces made appearances to hand out awards to the winners. However, during one segment, Sir Trevor McDonald introduced a clip which showed some of the biggest moments over the past 12 months. As a clip of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey popped up onto the screen, booing could be heard from the audience.
As he introduced Sir Trevor to the stage, Joel began: “This past year or so we have witnessed countless, memorable TV moments.
“To tell us more is a legend who received his first NTA 25 years ago and hosted this ceremony 13 times.
“His voice is like a fine wine or for those who don’t drink, a strong squash.
“He’s a true national Trevor. It’s Sir Trevor McDonald.”
“Thank you very much,” Sir Trevor began. “Ladies and gentlemen, television can bring us together like no other media.
“Over the past 20 months, we have never needed it more.
“When we were separated in lockdown, television connected us. It kept us informed.
“It kept us entertained. It provided essential company. It provided comfort and camaraderie.”
He continued: “Raising Britain’s moral and lifting all of our spirits.
“At momentous events, millions of us gathered around our television sets to share those moments together.
“The good news, sad news, bad news, the must-see dramas or talking points of important events.
“Television truly united us.”
A clip then began to play showing iconic moments from the past year.
It ranged from I’m A Celebrity, Strictly Come Dancing and Diversity’s Black Lives Matter dance routine on Britain’s Got Talent.
However, when a clip of Prince Harry and Meghan’s interview came up, according to The Sun, the audience could be heard booing.
Other clips that were shown included snippets from The Crown and Bridgerton.
Former Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan, who was also up for the best presenter award, also got booed by the crowd.
Many viewers took to social media throughout the night to share their thoughts on the booing.
“It’s the boos for me hahahaha,” one joked.
Another penned: “The boos for Piers Morgan omg I felt that.”
A third wrote: “The boos for Piers Morgan and ITV failing to drown them out.”
