'Riverdale': Will a 'Katy Keene' Character Join Archie in the Boxing Ring?

Ever since the Riverdale spin-off, Katy Keene introduced Katy’s boyfriend KO Kelly (Zane Holtz) as a boxer, fans have been wondering if he would ever face Archie (K.J. Apa) in the ring. Well, it looks like that time has come. In a recent Instagram post, series creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa shared a picture of KO and Archie together, teasing a crossover fight between the two.

Who is KO Kelly?

Riverdale’s spin-off series, Katy Keene is centered around Katy Keene (Lucy Hale), a designer who is trying to make it big in New York City. Her friends, including Riverdale character Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), come from all walks of life and support Katy through her endeavors.

KO Kelly is Katy’s longtime boyfriend who has known her since they were teens. He’s loving and supportive of Katy, and often encourages her to move forward with her design aspirations. But after she rejects his marriage proposal the two decide to part ways… for now.

Currently, KO works as a bouncer at a nightclub. But his dream is to be a famous boxer who wins a championship fight at Madison Square Garden. In an interview with EW, creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed how Riverdale’s favorite redhead inspired KO’s backstory.

“It was so funny — we did a big entire season of Archie as a boxer, and it was never imagined that Archie was going to be like Raging Bull,” Aguirre-Sacasa told the outlet. “But halfway through the season, we started developing Katy and we were like, ‘Katy’s boyfriend is a boxer. I remember one day I was like, ‘I never would have thought that I’d be working on any show in which boxing had a huge part.’ But to be working on it in two shows is slightly mind-blowing.”

‘Riverdale’ showrunner drops a major reveal

Showrunners Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi have been teasing a crossover fight for a while. During a panel at last year’s Tribeca TV Festival, Grassi said fans “will definitely see someone from Riverdale and K.O. face off in the ring.”

But on Instagram, Aguirre-Sacasa just dropped a major reveal about the upcoming episodes of Riverdale and Katy Keene. He posted a picture of KJ Apa and Zane Holtz as Archie and KO. Both are dressed in boxing shorts while standing in a boxing ring.

“#Riverdale/#KatyKeene crossover America NEEDS right now,” Aguirre-Sacasa captioned the photo. “Two new AMAZING episodes on the #cw this week!”

Why would KO and Archie meet on ‘Riverdale’ as opposed to ‘Katy Keene’?

Aguirre-Sacasa didn’t specify which show would feature the boxing match. But Katy Keene takes place five years in the future — relative to the Riverdale timeline. So, it makes more sense for the characters to meet on Riverdale

Taking the time factor into account, the new episode will probably introduce fans to a younger version of KO.  He’s probably going to be an amateur boxer like Archie who finds himself in a ring in Riverdale. Hopefully, with this crossover, fans will learn more about KO and history with Katy.
