Sara Cox reveals shock reason she didn’t want lucrative Radio 2 breakfast gig

Sara Cox has insisted she knew she would not get Chris Evans' Radio 2 Breakfast gig – and says she didn't want it anyway.

The new Radio 2 Drivetime host was expected to take on the morning show due to her previous role as stand in, until it was announced that Zoe Ball would be taking on the mantle.

But Sara said that while she loves the morning slot and enjoyed taking it on for 10 weeks a year, she knew she was not going to get the gig and in fact, there was a big reason why she didn't want to take it on in the first place.

Speaking to This Morning's Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, she said: "I loved standing in for Chris. I won’t fill in for Zoe.

"What it is, is when I used to swan in and cover for Chris, it was really eas. I was on there for two weeks, but by three or four o'clock I was kind of horrible to my kids.

"So Breakfast is a great gig and an amazing show, it’s great money bit I can’t mop up my kids’ tears with a wad of £50s."

Sara also revealed that she knew she would never get the gig, joking it was an "Old Chinese proverb that the stand in never gets the gig."

She continued: "[After Chris quit] My phone melted on my bed, loads of texts saying, 'You got something to tell me? What’s going on?'

"And one of the first texts was from Zoe saying, 'You’ve got this, we love you in my house, it’s you.'

"But I replied… 'the stand in never gets the gig,' it just doesn’t happen in radio and I never thought I was going to get Breakfast ever, but everyone else thought I would, so I was managing my families and friends.

"I knew for a while I wasn’t going to get it but you can’t say anything because they want to do a big announcement.

"And then Drivetime came and that’s lovely."

She also said that she felt Zoe is a brilliant choice, saying her being a woman is nothing to do with the new job.

Sara added: "The beauty about this moment is that more women are coming through in broadcasting, quite rightly… Zoe’s got the job because she’s a great braodcaster, not because she has fallopian tubes. It’s not because she’s a woman."

Sara and Zoe both start their new radio roles on Radio 2 on Monday, and This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.
