'Sex and the City': Mr. Big Could Have Dated Samantha Jones
For most Sex and the City fans, Mr. Big and Carrie Bradshaw were the ultimate couple. The pair’s on-again-off-again romance seemed to fuel the series for all six seasons. The moment Mr. Big finally told Carrie that she was the one filled fans with glee. Still, Mr. Big’s storyline was almost much different. Do you remember that Samantha Jones was initially interested in him?
Samantha Jones tried to pick up Mr. Big in the Pilot of Sex and the City
While Mr. Big and Carrie got together pretty early on in Sex and the City’s run, he piqued another character’s interest first. Carrie first ran into Mr. Big in the pilot episode of the series. The pair, literally, ran into each other on a city street. She wasn’t the first of her girl gang to notice him, though.
The following evening, Samantha and Carrie see Mr. Big in a lounge. Samantha was well aware of who Mr. Big was and even tried to get involved with him. In fact, she offered him a private “tour” and a cigar. Mr. Big didn’t go for it, though. Shortly after Samantha’s proposition, he started seriously pursuing Carrie, and that was the end of that.
Why didn’t Mr. Big go for Samantha?
Samantha was brutally rebuffed by the handsome Mr. Big, something that clearly didn’t happen often. She sulked off, and the potential hookup was never mentioned again. Fans, however, have a few theories about why Big didn’t go for Samantha’s proposition.
Reddit users suggest that Big wasn’t interested in women his age. Carrie was about 10 years his junior, and his second wife, Natasha, was even younger than that. He also appeared to date a string of women who were more than a decade younger than him. Samantha was around the same age as Mr. Big.
It’s also possible that Big was turned off by Samantha being so assertive. Mr. Big was characterized as cold and distant, but romantic when he wanted to be. It is also clear that he preferred to pursue and was turned off when a woman went after him too aggressively. Samantha was aggressive in her pursuit.
What would have happened if Samantha and Mr. Big actually got together?
Mr. Big was always intended for Carrie. After all, the character was based on a real person that Candace Bushnell had a long relationship with. Still, one can’t help but wonder what would have happened if Mr. Big had taken Samantha up on her proposal.
Evidence would suggest that Mr. Big would have been a blip on the radar if he had hooked up with Samantha instead of Carrie. Sam only had three significant relationships during the show’s six seasons. She hooked up with James before ending their romance because he wasn’t well endowed. She dated Richard Wright and then hooked up with Smith Jared. Mr. Big and Samantha were too much alike to have worked out long-term. They were both incredibly aloof, so it seems likely that they would have slept together once and then never spoken again.
