Cross, 68, said Friday on Facebook and Instagram about the illness sweeping America: "I'm not in the habit of discussing medical issues on social media.

"But I do so in hope this will help other people to understand how serious and how contagious this illness.

"For those of you who still do not believe the COVID-19 virus is real, or think it is a 'hoax' or part of some conspiracy, my advice to you is to understand right now that this is a deadly illness spreading like wildfire throughout the world."

The star shared a link to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's advice on the illnesses.

Symptoms for coronavirus have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death.

Now scientists have produced a day-by-day breakdown of the typical Covid-19 symptoms – to help people better understand the nature of the illness.

On Day 1, for most people the symptoms will be fever (temperature above 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and/or cough, which is usually dry to start with.

By day 5 people can develop signs of breathing difficulties.

Patients who are usually older or have a pre-existing health condition are normally the people who experience difficulty breathing – known as dyspnea.

Signs that a person is experiencing dyspnea include shortness of breath, feeling smothered or suffocated, tightness in the chest, rapid, shallow breathing, heart palpitations and wheezing.

Cross became famous in 1981 when his debut album, Christopher Cross, saw hime become the first person to win in all four major categories at the Grammy Awards in a single year.

This has only been matched by teenage singer Billie Eilish when she won record of the year, album of the year, song of the year and best new artist in January.
