Sophie Lancaster's mum praises Corrie for telling daughter's story through Nina

Sophie Lancaster’s mother Sylvia has praised Coronation Street for telling her daughter’s story through Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher).

In scenes airing tonight, Nina and boyfriend Seb (Harry Visinoni) will be attacked by Corey (Maximus Evans) and his drunken gang. These scenes have similarities to what happened to Sophie Lancaster in 2007, when she and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were beaten simply because of the way they looked. As a consequences of the attack, Sophie died from her injuries.

Sylvia – who has been working with Coronation Street throughout this storyline – has said it’s been lovely to see Corrie viewers take Nina ‘into their hearts.’

Sylvia is hoping the story will raise awareness of the horrific intolerance that can face people purely because of how they look.

‘They need to see the reality behind the story, which I think Coronation Street are particularly good at’ Sylvia explained at a recent press event.

Sylvia has been involved in Nina’s character development since the very beginning and has said she has loved seeing fans become attached to the character.

She added: ‘It was lovely to speak to Mollie and to actually see that she’s quite alternative in real life when she’s not playing Nina. But what I thought interestingly was that people have taken Nina to their hearts and that’s obviously lovely to see.

Because people are looking behind the image, they’re looking behind the clothes and they’re seeing the person, which is a massive part of the work that we’re doing, trying to get people to see that underneath all of this, they’re just the same people as you or I.’

‘And that is really important.’
