Spoilers: Yasmeen’s future revealed after shock Geoff exit in Corrie

Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) has endured the worst time of her life as she has been broken down and abused by evil Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) – and Coronation Street actress Shelley King has confirmed that her character will be forever changed by what has happened to her.

Even after she is physically free of Geoff, the much praised star explained that it wouldn’t be right for the story for Yasmeen to suddenly bounce back and, while she doesn’t think it should always define the character, she wants the writers to remain loyal to Yasmeen’s traumas and how they shape her future.

She told Metro.co.uk: ‘I think I have been given a great opportunity. The tunnel doesn’t come to an end. This trauma will affect her for the rest of her life – so I am looking forward to portraying that.

‘It would be too simplistic for her to simply be cured, whatever happens to her partner. And she is a Metcalfe, that also stays with her.

‘Not to bombard people with the coercive aftermath but to retain a hint of that – we owe that to the people who are going through this and who have worked with us. I feel very privileged.

‘Catharsis for Yasmeen is a long way away – producers, directors, the whole of team Corrie have been amazing – it will always be there even if it isn’t always about that.’

Shelley is now a staple of the Street – and long term actress of screen and stage Shelley has loved being a part of the anniversary and the programme overall.

She grinned: ‘My goodness, Coronation Street has been my life since I came to this country age 10. I remember in my 20s and working with Peggy Ashcroft and was so excited just out of drama school. My mother was more excited that I was sitting next to Pat Pheonix in the dressing room – I’d arrived as an actor!

‘Coronation Street opens doors to the reality and to the north, which is extraordinary. It’s so real and about people and it’s all about character, I love that. To be honoured with this and to have met all of these lovely people like Sally Dynevor and Joe Duttine and of course my lovely Barty and Sair has been a thrill.’
