Stephen Fry brands EastEnders a failure compared to Coronation Street
Stephen Fry has branded EastEnders as a failure compared to ITV soap Coronation Street.
The actor, broadcaster, comedian, director and writer believes the East-End soap’s portrayal of London life isn’t accurate.
Speaking on the podcast ‘My Seven Wonders with Clive Anderson’, he said: ‘The joke about EastEnders is, “it’s very true to life”, but actually, where it fails so often, unlike Coronation Street, is that it isn’t as funny. People are, whatever their situation, usually joking.
You look at the market in the East End of London or Huddersfield or Edinburgh, there’s usually people joking with each other’.
Mentioning that writers forget people ‘get through life by laughing’, Stephen continued: ‘Even if it’s a cheap silly joke about the weather being lovely when it’s raining, you know, a very basic piece of sarcasm’.
Stephen’s career was launched alongside Hugh Laurie in the comedy show A Bit of Fry and Laurie.
Since then, Stephen has appeared in a variety of different TV shows including Doctor Who and has voiced characters in the cartoon series Danger Mouse.
He was also the host of comedy panel show QI from 2003-2016.
In 2011, Stephen became the President for the mental health charity Mind, taking over from Lord Melvyn Bragg.
