Stranger Things season 3 spoilers: Who is The American at the end of Stranger Things?

Stranger Things season three on Netflix is full of mysteries, but the identity of “The American” is perhaps the biggest. Netflix viewers have been looking at all the clues in Stranger Things season three and they think The American is either Brennan (Matthew Modine) or Hopper (David Harbour). The American’s identity, however, may have been given away by a recent interview.

Who is The American at the end of Stranger Things?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things

The most likely identity of The American in Stranger Things is Hopper, last seen disappearing in the explosion caused by the closing of the gate to the Upside Down.

However, fans think that he too may have been sucked into the Upside Down and found himself in Russia.

One piece of evidence is that the Russian base is in Kamchatka.

STRANGER THINGS SEASON 3 CREDIT SCENE EXPLAINED

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, Kamchatka is named for the Kamchadal people, which is said to mean: “Men of the far end.”

Could this be a sign from Stranger Things season tree showrunners The Duffer Brothers that Hopper has fallen through a tunnel/portal in the Upside Down and found himself at the “far end” of it in Russia?

A writer on the Stranger Things Reddit also noted: “It may be in Russia, but the name actually means “exploded place” or “stretching terrain”.

“This could be the name the Russians give for the Upside Down.”

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE END OF STRANGER THINGS?

David Harbour seemed to confirm this in an interview in which, when asked what the future held for Hopper, he said: “Well, did you see the post-credits scene?”

However, some fans are still convinced that The American is Brennan, the man Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) knows as ‘Papa’ after he experimented on her.

Brennan was last seen seemingly devoured by demogorgons, but then in season two Eleven was told he was still alive.

He was confirmed to be alive by Stranger Things director Shawn Levy.

The director and Stranger Things executive producer hinted to Collider he would make a return at some point when he said: “It now seems clear that Brenner is alive, Brenner is out there.”

Matt Duffer also told IGN: “Yes, there’s a possibility of seeing him again.”

However, it seems strange that Brennan would find himself imprisoned in Kamchatka when, in series one of Stranger Things, it was implied he was working with the Russians in some way.

Then again, The Duffer Brothers could surely find a way for wither Hopper or Brennan to return – or, indeed, could make The American an entirely new character, presumably played by another 1980s legend.
