Strictly Come Dancing fans celebrate show's first ever same-sex routine as Nicola Adams & Katya Jones dance a quickstep
STRICTLY Come Dancing fans celebrated the show's first ever same-sex routine tonight as Nicola Adams and Katya Jones danced a quickstep.
Former boxer Nicola and pro-dancer Katya became the shows first same-sex couple, with their first performance highly anticipated by viewers.
And it didn't disappoint as they performed a quickstep to Get Happy by Ella Fitzgerald, swapping between holds and showing off some fast footwork.
Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: "Love me some history being made #Strictly."
Another added: "Thank you @NicolaAdamsOBE and Katya so amazing to see a same sex couple on #Strictly after all these years. Groundbreaking."
A third tweeted: "honestly nicola n katya were so good, making history n I'm so happy this partnership happened #Strictly."
While a fourth agreed: "Omg Katya and Nicola are EV-ER-Y-THING. Changing holds! That lovely little kick sequence at the end! I am so happy to see them together, proper grinning here."
The judges agreed, scoring the pair 21 out of 30 and placing them high up on the leaderboard.
Speaking about her dance partner Katya, Nicola told Grazia: "She's so creative and really good at choreography. She's unbelievable."
Nicola also shot down debate about the 'Strictly curse', and previously told The Sun that she that Katya was "smoking hot" but said she and girlfriend Ella Baig "are so strong we will never be a victim of the Strictly Curse".
Ella also added: "I’m not worried about the curse. Nicki and me are best friends so I don’t really see anyone as competition and she doesn’t either.
"The grass is never greener on the other side and me and Nicki have a lot of history together, so I don’t think anyone is going to steal her off me.
"We did have a conversation about the curse and we agreed I would meet her dance partner so there are no hard feelings or jealousy there."
