The Crown true story: How the Queen forgave Philip for drinking and partying late

Prince Philip and the Queen’s wedding is the monumental royal event that kicks of Netflix drama The Crown. The hit series will return for season three next month after the first two series chronicled the highs and lows of the royal marriage up until Prince Edward’s birth in 1964.

Formal naval officer Prince Philip gave up his budding career to serve the crown after his wife ascended the throne in 1952.

In the Netflix drama, the Duke of Edinburgh struggles to find his place in royal life once Queen Elizabeth II takes the throne.

As an exiled Greek prince with German in-laws, Philip was not immediately welcomed by all palace aides and took some time to settle.

Philip’s teething problems within the royal household are widely acknowledged to be true, as were his regular trips to the Thursday Club where he enjoyed drinking late with friends.

In the show the Queen, played by actress Clare Foy, turns-a-blind eye to her husband’s late-night revelling.

Her forgiveness of Philip for coming home late after drinking is based on the truth.

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward told the Radio Times: “She was very conscious of the fact that he had to walk two steps behind her, and I think as a result she was very forgiving of any of his little misdemeanours.

“You know, when he got drunk at the Thursday Club and when he came home late.”

She added: “She was forgiving of him, because she felt that he’d been emasculated by her position, and he’s a very alpha male.”

As well as sacrificing his naval career to be a dutiful husband, Philip was dealt another blow when he and the Queen had children.

When Charles was born in 1948 the Second World War was still a fresh memory and there were fears Philip’s German surname, Mountbatten, would sit uncomfortably with Britons.

The Duke was, therefore, stopped from passing on his surname to his progeny, a move that left him emasculated according to Ms Seward.

In Ms Seward’s book My Husband and I: The Inside Story of 70 Years of the Royal Marriage, she chronicles Philip’s reaction.

The heartbroken Duke was reported to have said: “I am the only man in the country not allowed to give his name to his children.

“I’m nothing but a bloody amoeba.”

As for the suggestion of Prince Philip’s affairs which are heavily implied in The Crown, these have been dismissed as false.

Ms Seward told the Radio Times, “He couldn’t even look at another woman without the press saying that he was probably having an affair. There is absolutely no proof that he was unfaithful.”

When Prince Phillip was once asked by a very brave reporter if any of the reports of infidelity are true, he replied, “How could I? I have had a detective in my company, night and day, since 1947.”

The 98-year-old Duke retired from public life in 2017 and now is said to spend most of his time on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

Prince Philip is said to enjoy his time painting watercolours and going for country walks.

He made a rare appearance for Lady Gabriella Windsor’s royal wedding at St George’s Chapel in May.

The Duke of Edinburgh is expected to join the Queen for their grandaughter Princess Beatrice’s royal wedding next year.
