Vikings season 6 spoilers: Hvitserk’s real name revealed in historic twist fans missed

Vikings fans are no stranger to the ways of Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel). Ragnar made his way through the world conquering different settlements, and sleeping with a number of women on the way. This lead to the viking garnering six sons – with the most prominent in the show being Ivar the Boneless (Alexander Hogh Andersen), and Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) – who are currently enthralled in a battle against one another.

However, the other sons of the warrior include Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith), Sigurd (David Lindström), and Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø).

While Sigurd unfortunately was killed off, Ubbe and Hvitserk have maintained a strong position in the show.

But recently fans of the show have been diving into the real-life history of the characters from Vikings, and revealing a number of secrets from their backgrounds.

One of the more interesting pieces of information involves Hvitserk, and his name.

Reddit user Aremeriel pointed out Hvitserk was not his real name, but rather something else.

The user wrote: “Actually, Halfdan Ragnarsson is the same as Hvitserk.

“The name was Halfdan and Hvitserk was a nickname because he wore white tunics.”

In history, as detailed by the Norwegian and Swedish saga Heimskringla, Halfdan Lodbrok took over a lot of Anglo-Saxon England.

Halfdan was one of Ragnar’s sons, however in the texts including Hvitserk, scholars have suggested the duo are the same person.

As Halfdan was supposedly a very common name among vikings, Hvitserk – which literally means “white shirt” – may have been a nickname for the warrior.

With this in mind, viewers may have been introduced to the character as Hvitserk, even though his name may secretly be Halfdan.

This character trait may be explored in the upcoming sixth season, as all of the sons of Ragnar come together to battle it out for Kattegat.

Recently, fans of the show have been yearning for the return of Rolo (Clive Standen) to the show.

And Michael Hirst has happily spoken out about the character’s potential return for its final season.

Speaking to Cinema Blend on whether Rollo would be returning, he teased: “Well if I could tease that out a little bit, I would say ‘yes’ and ‘no.’

“But Rollo’s re-appearance will be a huge surprise, as indeed it was rather a surprise to me. But I’ll leave it to that.”
