Bank holiday 25C sizzler to bring traffic jams today and barbecues tomorrow

FAMILIES face bank holiday traffic jams today  — but will be enjoying barbecues in the sun tomorrow.

But the weekend weather outlook is bright with temperatures of 25C (77F) on the cards.

Up to 11 million people are expected to hit the roads to go on breaks and visits, the RAC said.

Drivers were stuck in a 15-mile queue on the M25 near Heathrow yesterday and endured a six-mile crawl on the M3 in Hampshire.

Major roads were clogged in Devon and Cornwall as holidaymakers headed for the coast.


Accidents on the M5 in Gloucestershire led to 90-minute queues.

An estimated 35million Brits will go out to eat, drink and shop over the holiday weekend.

Families firing up their barbecues are expected to eat 48million burgers, and 36million sausages.

Drinkers will down 62million pints, 42million from pubs and 20million from shops.

Tesco meat buyer Natalie Linden said: “We anticipate selling three times more BBQ meat than last weekend.”

The Met Office said temperatures will steadily climb before peaking at 25C across the South and South East on Monday.

The 70,000 reopened hotels, B&Bs and Air- bnbs reported a rush.

Tim Seward, chairman of Bournemouth Hospitality Association, said hotels in the Dorset resort “will be at 99 or 100 per cent occupancy”.
