Boris-backer Jacob Rees-Mogg joins push for No Deal Brexit if new PM can't get brand new deal
JACOB Rees-Mogg has officially joined the push for a No Deal Brexit if the new PM can't get a brand new deal.
The top Brexiteer joined a group of MPs urging the new PM to rip up Theresa May's deal completely and start again.
And if Boris or Hunt can't get a new deal, then he wants the next leader to go for a No Deal instead on October 31.
In a video for grassroots group Stand up 4 Brexit today he insisted the deal was "defunct".
And he added: "There must be no more shilly-shallying.
"We need to leave on different terms, whether that is with an agreement or not."
Mr Rees-Mogg, who is a backer of frontrunner Boris Johnson, said that it wasn't just the hated backstop but the rest of the withdrawal agreement that "does not work", and the new PM must get something different.
He insisted that Boris would "lift our spirits" and "peddle optimism" to show how we can make the economy work outside the EU.
"We must leave on the 31 October," he said.
"It has been promised to voters not just once in the referendum in 2016 but also by the 2017 general election.
"There is a great future for this country outside the failed economic model of the European Union."
Three more backers are set to join the Stand up 4 Brexit campaign today – making the total number of MPs on board 46.
In the final vote on the PM's deal back in March, 34 Tories voted it down.
MPs Henry Smith and Eddie Hughes, along with Mr Rees Mogg are expected to pledge today.
Mr Hughes wrote for The Sun Online today: "Boris has guaranteed that Brexit will happen by 31 October, and he won’t time-waste by resurrecting Theresa May’s EU deal which Parliament has voted against three times.
"Instead, Boris will hasten the country’s preparations for 31 October and offer the EU a free trade deal, similar to the one they offered us in 2018 which the last government declined.
"He already has the support of Parliament: four fifths of MPs voted to trigger Article 50 back in 2017. Whatever MPs say or do, unless they confront and do something about this legal reality, they are whistling in the wind.
"We must 'Stand up 4 Brexit' and deliver the result of the 2016 referendum by 31 October."
Boris won’t time-waste resurrecting May’s deal which Parliament has slapped down three times
By Eddie Hughes MP
THE Conservative Party has not been connecting with the majority of hardworking voters.
The political class has been caught in the Brexit headlights, gripped with fear, not knowing which way to turn. This dithering has bored the nation, destroyed trust in politics and stopped us focusing on the issues that voters really care about, like housing.
Over the last 25 years, house prices have risen almost seven times as much as our monthly pay cheques. We need a new approach.
A Blue Collar Conservatism housing agenda will make us the proud party of home ownership again. By expanding “shared ownership housing”, everyone – not just the privileged few – will be able to buy a stake in society and ensure that their hard work is rewarded. But we will only be able to do this if we deliver Brexit.
That’s why I’m supporting Boris Johnson to become our next PM. He has guaranteed that Brexit will happen by 31 October, and he won’t time-waste by resurrecting Theresa May’s EU deal which Parliament has voted against three times.
Instead, Boris will hasten the country’s preparations for 31 October and offer the EU a free trade deal, similar to the one they offered us in 2018 which the last government declined.
He already has the support of Parliament: four fifths of MPs voted to trigger Article 50 back in 2017. Whatever MPs say or do, unless they confront and do something about this legal reality, they are whistling in the wind.
We must “Stand up 4 Brexit” and deliver the result of the 2016 referendum by 31 October.
Fail to do this and Jeremy Corbyn and his merry band of dangerous, job-crushing, high taxing, economically illiterate supporters will end up in No.10 and destroy the aspirations of a generation of hard working families.
Succeed and we will restore faith in politics and unite the country as we move on to deliver the Blue Collar agenda that will allow us to reach out to communities that have never voted Conservative before.
Boris has repeatedly promised he will take Britain out of the EU by October 31 – deal or no deal.
His rival, Jeremy Hunt, has said he is aiming to leave by October 31 but will seek another extension if a deal is on the cards but not yet done.
Earlier this week The Sun revealed that more than 40 MPs now want the new PM to throw out the deal completely – which will dash hopes they have of trying to make any tweaks to it and get it over the line.
And in recent Boris said he didn't want to tinker it around the edges anymore, effectively killing ideas of trying to negotiate a change to the backstop, such as a five-year time limit.
