A businesswoman has been banned and fined after drinking a bottle of wine and then smashing her Honda Accord into two parked cars while making a 400-yard trip to buy cigarettes.

Hair salon boss Nicola Cockayne, 36, had consumed a bottle of white wine plus Baileys during a girls night out – but believed she was fine to drive to a local late night convenience store.

Just a minute later, Cockayne ploughed her Honda Accord into two parked cars and was found at the scene smelling of alcohol with blood pouring from her nose.

The 36-year-old failed a roadside breath test and was later found to be nearly one and half times the alcohol limit for driving.

At Manchester magistrates court, Cockayne, of Rochdale, admitted driving with excess alcohol and was banned from driving for 14 months and fined £200.

The incident occurred at 9.40pm on April 30 after Cockayne had gone out with friends whilst her husband was away.

She arrived home following a meal and carried on drinking then discovered she had run out of cigarettes and decided to go out in her car to buy some.

Prosecuting Miss Martha Dowd said: ‘Officers were called to a collision involving three vehicles. Two police officers attended and found the defendant bloody from the nose and with blood on the steering while.

Tests showed Cockayne had 117 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. the legal limit for driving is 80mg

‘She had the smell of intoxicants on her breath and her eyes were glazed. She said she had been out for dinner and had returned home then realised she had no cigarettes so went back out for them in the car.

‘She was taken to Fairfield hospital and a sample of blood was taken. The defendant was interviewed and admitted to having a bottle of wine and a glass of Baileys.

‘She had four glasses of wine with dinner and had then driven home. She couldn’t remember what happened in the road traffic accident, she just remembers her face exploding. She thought she would have been fine to drive based on how she felt.’

In mitigation defence lawyer Shane Parkin said: ‘She gave a full and frank admission in interview. She suffers from depression and was out with friends whilst her partner was away.

‘She carried on drinking at home after coming back but realised she had no cigarettes and decided to drive to a local shop. Her recollection is not the best but the reading on the blood alcohol is not stratospheric. She collided with parked cars and there was no injury involved.

‘She is fully insured and that has covered her vehicle and the others involved. She is remorseful.’

Cockayne will have to undergo a drink driving rehabilitation course before she is allowed back on the roads. She was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £32.
