Captain Sir Tom Moore awarded first veterans’ railcard — to say thank you for his World War Two service

CAPTAIN Sir Tom Moore has been awarded the first veterans’ railcard — to say thank you for his World War Two service.

More than 830,000 people could benefit from cut-price travel when the cards go on sale on Armistice Day.

The £21 passes will give veterans and their families up to a third off the cost of rail travel, as part of a Tory manifesto promise.

Captain Tom, 100, who raised £30million for the NHS, said he hoped the cards would help to combat loneliness by bringing friends and families together.

He said: “It is a rare opportunity to show thanks and gratitude to veterans.”

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps added: “We have an eternal debt of honour to those who have served our country.

“For veterans looking to connect with friends and family, it will cut the cost of travel to open up new opportunities.”

Royal British Legion chief Charles Byrne urged former service personnel to get the cards.

He said: “At a time when many veterans are facing significant financial hardship, we hope as many as possible will be able to enjoy the benefits this will bring.”
