Coronavirus news live – Another 16 dead in the UK and Spain closes 55 beaches
The UK’s death toll from coronavirus currently stands at 44,236 after another 16 deaths were recorded on Monday.
The figures, released by the Department for Health yesterday, include deaths in all settings.
There were no new fatalities reported in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Meanwhile, Spain was forced to close some of its most popular beaches after scores of visitors flocked to the coast over the weekend.
Officials in Andalucía, southern Spain, closed 55 beaches just days after Britons were given the green light to travel to the country without having to quarantine for 14 days on return.
A total of 29 beaches on Málaga’s Costa del Sol – a long-time favourite among British tourists – reached full capacity on Sunday, causing officials to close them in a bid to avoid a second coronavirus peak.
