Georgia family says cops shot at a car full of unarmed children, report says

A Georgia family said cops shot at a car full of black children, one as young as 9, according to a report.

The incident unfolded in Waycross, Ga. as five youngsters, ranging in age from 9 to 16, were headed home from a Walmart about 8 a.m. Saturday and a police car started to follow them, Dominique Goodman Sr. told a local television station.

Three of the youngest kids in the car told News4Jax a police car turned on its lights to pull them over. The 12-year-old said the older teens were scared, and told the three youngest to get out, run home and get their father.

That’s when cops started shooting, according to the 9-year-old who said a bullet whizzed by his head.

Goodman said he went outside after hearing gunfire and saw the kids running toward him.

The kids were slated to go to a football tournament in Jacksonville, Fla., Saturday which is about 90 minutes south of Waycross, he said. Two of the children were supposed to play in the tournament, he added.

“They shot at a car full of unarmed minors. A car full of unarmed children. Like, who in the world can’t see that this is a 9-year-old? Who can’t see that this is a child? They look like children,” Goodman said. “They are babies. What was the purpose of shooting?”

Goodman said he was traumatized by the shooting at the hands of police officers.

“Why are you shooting at a 9-year-old, a 12-year-old, a 14-year-old if you’re not trying to kill them. You are a trained shooter. You were trying to kill my children,” Goodman said to the TV reporter in a video of the interview filmed by UnEdited Real Talk Right Now.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said it was probing the incident at the request of local police.

The GBI said that preliminary information indicated a Waycross police officer noticed a traffic violation and then saw three kids, age 9, 12 and 14, run from the car.

“A second officer responded to assist while the first officer followed the three minors in his vehicle.  As the second officer began to approach the vehicle from the front, the vehicle drove towards him. The officer fired multiple times at the vehicle,” the GBI said in a news release.

The two teens in the car, ages 15 and 16, got out while it was still in drive, and there was an “altercation” between the younger teen and a police officer, the GBI said.

The teen was “eventually secured in handcuffs. He was treated by EMS for minor injuries from the altercation,” GBI said.

A woman posted on Facebook that her brother was “pistol whipped” by police.

“My brother was man handled pulled out the car possibly tased and pistol whipped, but no injuries?” Savannah Boyd wrote.

No officers were hurt during the incident.
