A six-bedroom property on the prestigious street once home to Oscar Wilde, David Bowie, George Best and Bob Marley has hit the market with a price tag of £10 million.

The terraced house sits upon the famed Oakley Street – one of the most sought-after locations in Chelsea.

Reggae legend Bob Marley moved into the house next door in 1977 following an attempt on his life in Jamaica – the same year he released his album, Exodus, which stayed on the British album charges for 56 consecutive weeks.

Acclaimed Irish playwright Wilde lived at Number 87 with his mother Jane, while David Bowie lived in neighbouring number 89 in 1973.

Bowie lived in the iconic street for at least a few years and eventually the house was sold to footballer George Best, who resided there until his death in 2005.

It’s no surprise, then, to learn the current house on the market has only had three owners in its lifetime – despite being built in 1870.

The current owner has lived in the house for the past 15 years and has undertaken huge renovations over the years.

He brought in wooden beams from a French chateau, and 17th-century terracotta tiles, keeping the property chic while still remaining timeless and appealing to a broad spectrum of buyers in the price range.

Estate agents Tedworth Property describe the 4,300 sq ft home as a ‘truly unique property with exceptional living and entertaining space’.

‘The house has been thoughtfully and cleverly redesigned by the current owner to create an exceptionally bright and airy double height living space set around a courtyard which is perfect for all year round al-fresco entertaining.’

The home boasts six bedrooms, three bathrooms and a west-facing terrace, with a 12m heated swimming pool and one of the largest gardens in Chelsea – 40m long.

‘The garden is particularly special,’ the selling agent said. It also features a summer house with it’s own kitchenette, shower-room and sauna ideal for ‘home working, extra guest accommodation or extra entertaining space’.

Internally, the home features a formal double reception, a separate sitting room and dining area, a master bedroom suite which occupies the entire first floor and a further four double bedrooms.

The asking price for the property is £10,750,000.

Oakley Street begins just off Kings Road in Chelsea and runs all the way down to the River Thames.

The road was also home to traitor Donald Maclean, a British diplomat who spied for the Soviet Union, the 1911 suffragettes, pianist Angus Morrison and much of the street was once Winchester House – the residence for the Bishops of Winchester.
