More than £5,000 has been raised for a homeless woman who prematurely gave birth to twins outside Cambridge University.

The woman, believed to be roughly 30, gave birth on Sidney Street outside Trinity College shortly before 7am on December 23.

Members of the public helped the woman and called her an ambulance. Paramedics arrived shortly after and took her to Rosie Hospital for further treatment.

A witness claimed the woman gave birth to her children at 29 weeks – roughly 11 weeks early.

In May 2018 it was revealed Oxbridge colleges were sitting on a £21billion fortune – including property across the UK worth £3.5billion (pictured: Trinity College, Cambridge)

She said she had cycled past at around 7.15 and saw both the mother and the two babies wrapped up in blankets inside the ambulances.

The witness told Cambridgeshire Live: ‘They were all in the ambulances by the time I cycled past. My workmate was first on the scene, and luckily Sainsbury’s was open early that morning and she ran in there for help.

‘I’m hoping she gets given somewhere to live and the babies are ok. With what people are doing right now with Corbyn’s Christmas Challenge what happened is very relevant to many people.’

Corbyn’s Christmas Challenge is a campaign by disappointed Labour supporters who are donating to food banks and nominating others to do the same.

A spokesman from the East of England Ambulance Service said: ‘An ambulance was sent to Sidney Street, Cambridge shortly before 7am yesterday following reports of a woman in labour.

‘A woman and two infants were transported to Rosie Hospital for further assessment and care.’

A crowdfunding campaign has since been launched by kind-hearted members of the public to help ‘her care for herself and her children at the darkest, coldest time of the year’.

In May 2018 it was revealed Oxbridge colleges were sitting on a £21billion fortune – including property across the UK worth £3.5billion.

Trinity College, Cambridge, was the wealthiest of the colleges, with published assets worth £1.3billion in the 2018 accounts.

Jess Agar, who is organising the fundraiser on Just Giving, wrote: ‘Childbirth should be an exciting time of joy and wonder.

‘Imagine giving birth alone on the pavement, in the shadow of the richest college in Cambridge.

‘If you have anything you can spare for this woman, please give generously.

‘Whether we are religious or not, many of us will be familiar with the Christmas story of a mother who gave birth to her child in poverty, seeking refuge in a stable.

‘This is the reality for many people living on the streets.

‘The roots of homelessness in this country go deep, but we can start at home, with those in need on our doorstep. Please give what you can, to make this festive season a little brighter.’

The crowdfunder has already beaten its initial target of £500, raising more than £5,000 as of this morning.
