Finance trader who spent £3,500 on burgers and magnums of champagne at a Marbella restaurant then complained about paying a tip is mocked for his poor taste online

A finance trader who spent £3,500 on burgers and magnums of champagne at a Marbella restaurant and then complained about paying a tip has been mocked online.

Enrique Moris complained his party of eight paid a £320 service charge but were approached by an angry waiter asking for a tip as they left the restaurant on Spain’s Costa del Sol.  

‘Marbella, the new Ibiza, fraudsters everywhere,’ he wrote alongside a picture of the bill on Twitter.

The bill included 13 beers, at seven euros (£6) a piece, and eight Waygu beef burgers costing 28 euros (£24) each. 

Users rushed to mock Moris for his poor taste – some saying they hoped the group was feeling worse for wear after drinking beer, tequila, and champagne all evening. 

Others poked fun at Moris for pairing expensive champagne with burgers.   

‘The pairing of dom perignon with hamburgers I just didn’t see it,’ one wrote. 

‘You have to be tacky to spend more than €3,000 in champagne to accompany some burgers. If you go big, do it with the whole menu’, another added. 

Others mocked Moris for spending the equivalent of ‘ten pensions’ on a dinner of hamburgers’.  

‘What do you want? Solidarity? The nouveau riche is always more stupid than people who’ve always been rich’, they wrote. 

Another said: ‘I know Marbella very well, and you have had to go to eat in a very exclusive place for those prices, Puerto Banus or something like that. I’m sure you could have eaten a lot better for 10 times less’.

Automatic service charges are not standard in Spain, but patrons usually leave tip of five per cent or less. 

But Twitter users branded Moris ‘miserable’ for refusing to tip the waiter after such an expensive meal. 

However, some users jumped to Moris’s defence, saying the waiters should earn their tips, rather than ask for them.  

One users wrote: ‘You should never demand a tip. It must be won. Depending on the place, prices, service, context and the client, it will depend on whether there is a tip or not.’

Moris later claimed he had posted the bill hoping to whip up a social media frenzy after reading on a book on marketing which advised him to ‘start a fight’. 

But he also complained ‘people are talking more than they should about a meal’.
