The Queen told Jacinda Ardern ‘you just get on with it’ when she was asked for advice on how to juggle being a mother and leader.

The New Zealand prime minister was pregnant with her only child when she met the Queen in 2018.

She became only the second elected head of government to give birth, to daughter Neve, while in office a few months later.

Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg show yesterday, Miss Ardern, 42, said she asked the Queen how she managed being both a mother and a leader during their first meeting. She said: ‘One of the things on my mind alongside being a new prime minister was being a prime minister and a mum.

‘I said to her, “How did you manage?” And I remember she said, “Well, you just get on with it”. And that was actually probably the best and most factual advice I could have.’ She added: ‘You do, you just take every day as it comes. And [the Queen] did. But I have such respect for her because I see now what it takes to be a mum and a leader and she did it more times over than I.’

The Queen had two children, Charles and Anne, before she acceded to the throne in 1952, before giving birth to Andrew and Edward in the 1960s as a reigning monarch.

The only other elected leader to give birth in office was former Pakistani PM, Benazir Bhutto.
