Trump says USPS testimony timed to undermine RNC
President Trump on Monday accused Democrats of undermining the Republican National Convention by scheduling Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to testify on its opening day.
“Why is Congress scheduled to meet (on Post Office) next Monday, during the Republican Convention, rather than now, while the Dems are having their Convention. They are always playing games. GET TOUGH REPUBLICANS!!!” he tweeted.
DeJoy is likely to face a barrage of accusations from Democrats who claim he’s trying to prevent mail-in voting, overshadowing the renomination of Trump by Republican delegates.
Democrats recently cited disappearing and locked mailboxes and removed mail-sorting machines as evidence DeJoy is undermining voting by mail. Former President Barack Obama said last week that Trump was attempting to “kneecap” the US Postal Service.
Trump denies undermining balloting, though he often criticizes states that will mail ballots to all voters due to the coronavirus pandemic, arguing it creates more opportunity for fraud. He said Democrats are to blame for not approving Postal Service funds as part of stalled COVID-19 relief legislation.
House Oversight Committee chairwoman Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) wrote to DeJoy on Sunday calling for an “urgent” hearing on changes at the USPS.
DeJoy, who took office in May, will testify Monday, Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. His remarks are likely to be carried live on cable news stations.
“Your testimony is particularly urgent given the troubling influx of reports of widespread delays at postal facilities across the country — as well as President Trump’s explicit admission last week that he has been blocking critical coronavirus funding for the Postal Service in order to impair mail-in voting efforts,” Maloney wrote.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Sunday that lawmakers would be recalled to vote on legislation from Maloney that would bar USPS from making any changes to services that were running at the start of the year.
