UK weather forecast – Temperatures ‘to plunge to -10C over next two weeks’ as Britain is engulfed by freezing fog – The Sun
WEATHER forecasters have warned temperatures could plunge as low as -10C over the next two weeks as freezing fog engulfs Britain.
The alert comes amid fears the UK could be facing a “40-day freeze” as an Arctic blast brings frost and snow to the country.
A worrying map from WX Charts shows the UK could be in store for bitterly-cold weather starting on December 14.
The weather agency map reveals the north of England will see temperatures plunge to around -7C on Sunday December 15.
The coldest temperature will be seen in central Scotland, with fears the mercury could plunge to -10C on Monday December 16 at midnight.
In its long range weather forecast, the Met Office warned the temperature will dip below normal during this time period.
There will be an increased risk of wintry showers the further north you go, forecasters say.
The Met Office also warned of widespread snow in the North and strong winds across the UK, especially in the south.
Frost and freezing fog is also expected, particularly in the North.
The Met Office has also issued a “severe” yellow warning for fog in the south-east for today.
It comes after reports that 11 inches of snow could blanket parts of the UK next week.
Scotland and Northern England will be hit the hardest, with the worst of the snow expected to settle in the Highlands.
Snow as deep as 10 inches will have blanketed Scottish Highlands and Inverness by the end of next week, rising to 11 and a half inches by December 18, according to Weathertrending.
The Met Office has also issued severe ‘Yellow’ warnings for rain in Scotland on Thursday and Friday this week.
Forecasters have warned that heavy downpours will make icy conditions particularly dangerous as temperatures plummet below zero.

Leon Brown, head of meteorological operations at the Weather Company, warned of a prolonged period of icy conditions.
He told the Express: “Thirty to 40 days with snow or ice disruption are expected this winter in Scotland and parts of northern England.
“After cold spells in December, more sustained cold is expected during January and February.”
A crippling Arctic blast is to blame for the plummeting temperatures – with fierce snowstorms threatening to blanket Northern regions, and most of Wales.
And icy wind coming over the next couple of days could even feel as cold as -12C, experts warn – with the harsh breeze making Brits twice as cold.
