Young girl plunges to her death after falling 30ft over cliff edge when she wandered away from her parents on holiday

A YOUNG girl has died after plunging 30ft over a cliff edge while on holiday with her family in Tasmania.

The girl, from Victoria, was walking along the edge of a clifftop in the Sand River conservation area in Buckland when she slipped and fell, cops said.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at 2.20pm on Friday, ABC reports.

Paramedics battled the save the little girl, who has not been identified, but she died at the scene.

"CPR was administered but sadly the child died at the scene," Tasmania Police said in a statement.

"The child is from Victoria and was visiting Tasmania with her siblings.

"Her parents have now been formally informed.

"Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this difficult time."

The scene of the incident was not accessible by road and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and police units from Sorell and Orford were called in, cops said.

'TRAGIC ACCIDENT'

"Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this difficult time," the statement said.

"Police would like to speak to anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident."

Tributes to the young girl poured in on social media on Friday evening.

"Such a tragic accident. Thinking of her poor family at this very sad time," one wrote.

Another said: "Deepest sympathy and condolences to the family.

"What a tragedy. Heart felt gratitude to the emergency services and all involved."

The Sand River conservation area was was uncovered as a climbing destination about 2017, according to the Tasmania Examiner.

There are some 150 routes through the area.
