Netflix movies: Best films on Netflix to watch while you’re self-isolating

Streaming service Netflix has an enormous library of binge-worthy TV and offers around 3,000 film titles. With millions of people stuck inside due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has so far infected more than 500,000 people worldwide, there’s not much else to do than sit in front of the TV.

But with Netflix’s huge library of films, it can be hard to find the perfect one to watch.

As of April 2019, the platform had more than 148 million paid subscriptions worldwide.

Netflix has everything from horror to action, comedies and documentaries and even has a prominent role in independent film distribution.

The King’s Speech (2010) – Drama/History

The King’s Speech is a historical drama film directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler.

Colin Firth plays the future King George VI who, to cope with a stammer, sees Lionel Logue, an Australian speech and language therapist played by Geoffrey Rush.

He tried to overcome his problem to make himself worthy enough to lead his country through World War II.

Behind the Vatican walls, Pope Benedict and the future Pope Francis must find common ground to forge a new path for the Catholic Church.

Although much of the content is based on historic events, including speeches and philosophical debates that were published, most other aspects were fictionalised.

Dunkirk (2017) – War/Drama

Dunkirk is a 2017 war film written, directed, and produced by Christopher Nolan that depicts the Dunkirk evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, of World War II.

During the war, soldiers from the British Empire, Belgium and France try to evacuate from the town of Dunkirk during a arduous battle with German forces.

Wonder Woman (2017) – Action

The American superhero film Wonder Woman is based on the DC Comics character of the same name.

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot in the title role, alongside Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen, and Elena Anaya.

When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Marriage Story (2019) – Comedy/Drama

A stage director and his actor wife struggle through a gruelling, coast-to-coast divorce that pushes them to their personal and creative extremes.

The film, written by Netflix, stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver and Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta co-star.

The Irishman (2019) – Drama/Crime

The Irishman is an American epic crime film directed and produced by Martin Scorsese and written by Steven Zaillian.

An ageing hitman recalls his time with the mob and the intersecting events with his friend, Jimmy Hoffa, through the 1950-70s.

The film is based on the 2004 nonfiction book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) – Comedy/Action

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is directed by Jake Kasdan and stars Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black.

When four students play with a magical video game, they are drawn to the jungle world of Jumanji, where they are trapped as their avatars.

To return to the real world, they must finish the game.

The Revenant (2015) – Western/Adventure

Based on a novel of the same name, The Revenant is a story of revenge.

Hugh Glass, a legendary frontiersman, is severely injured in a bear attack and is abandoned by his hunting crew.

The film stars Leonardo Dicaprio, Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson.

The Theory of Everything (2014) – Drama/Romance

The Theory of Everything is about astrophysics student Stephen Hawking.

While working on his research at Cambridge University he learns he suffers from motor neurone disease and has around two years to live.

The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Stephen and Felicity Jones as his wife Jane.

Moneyball (2011) – Sport/Drama

Moneyball is a biographical sports drama film directed by Bennett Miller and written by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin starring Brad Pitt.

The film is based on Michael Lewis’s 2003 nonfiction book of the same name, an account of the Oakland Athletics baseball team’s 2002 season and their general manager Billy Beane’s attempts to assemble a competitive team.

Billy Beane joins forces with Yale graduate Peter Brand to challenge the old-school selection methods and reinvent his team using a sabermetric model that has never been used before.

Roma (2018) – Drama

Roma is a 2018 drama film written, directed and produced by Alfonso Cuarón.

Set in 1970 and 1971, Roma follows the life of a live-in housekeeper of a middle-class family, as a semi-autobiographical take on Cuarón’s upbringing in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City.

The Fundamentals of Caring (2016) – Drama

Writer Paul Rudd retires after a personal tragedy and becomes a disabled teen named Trevor’s caregiver.

When the two embark on an impromptu road trip, their ability to cope is tested as they start to understand the importance of hope and friendship.

Written and directed by Rob Burnett, it is based on the 2012 novel The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving by Jonathan Evison.

Matilda (1996) – Family/Comedy

One of the best children’s films on the 1990s, Matilda is a dark and witty adaption of Roald Dahl’s book of the same name.

The film was released in 1996 and co-produced and directed by Danny DeVito from a screenplay written by Nicholas Kazan and Robin Swicord.

Beasts of No Nation 92015) – War/Drama

As civil war rages in Africa, a fierce warlord, played by Idris Elba, trains a young orphan named Agu to join his group of guerrilla soldiers.

The American-Ghanaian war drama film was written, co-produced and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Story (2019) – Drama/Crime

The American neo-Western crime thriller film serves as an epilogue to the television series Breaking Bad.

Series creator Vince Gilligan wrote, directed, and produced the film, while Aaron Paul reprised his role as Jesse Pinkman.
