A Doctor Shared the Most Common Skincare Mistakes People Keep Making

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Doctor Mike, aka Mike Varshavski MD, shared some of the most common mistakes that people make with regards to their skin which lead to them visiting the emergency room. “The skin needs to be looked after just like all the other organs in our bodies,” he says.

Whether your skincare routine is a carefully calibrated exercise in alchemy, or simply a case of putting on moisturiser when you can remember, you’ll want to avoid these big no-no’s:

Popping pimples

“As a general rule, you should not pop your own pimples,” says Mike. He warns that if you break the skin barrier while popping a pimple, you actually risk permanent acne scarring, as well as potential infection due to bacteria. It can even lead to a worse skin outbreak. “In fact, popping a pimple can actually delay your body’s natural healing process,” he adds.

Using hydrogen peroxide or alcohol

This might seem counterintuitive and go against popular wisdom, but Mike states that using rubbing alcohol to clean a wound on the skin can cause harm to the tissue and delay healing. “The best way to clean a minor wound is with cool running water and mild soap,” he says.

Shaving too hard

“The harder you push down, the more uneven the skin surface becomes, because the skin begins to dimple,” he says. “You’ll still get a great, nick-free shave if you use a light touch.”

Social media fads

“Miracle cures don’t exist, and some of the skincare ‘hacks’ we see online are complete B.S.,” he says. He adds that what works for one person may not work for another, and that some of the influencers who are promoting these products probably aren’t mentioning the cosmetic surgery and expensive facials that help given them that youthful, dewy glow.

Forgetting to wear sunscreen

Sunblock isn’t just for the beach; you should be wearing a minimum of 30 SPF all year round, even on cloudy days. “Sun exposure causes sunspots, skin damage, and even leads to skin cancer,” says Mike.

Ignoring your neck

The neck is one of the first places to show signs of ageing on the body, so you should be giving that as much attention as your face when it comes to moisturiser. “If your skincare routine stops at the jawline, you’re doing it wrong.”

Switching up your skincare routine too often

While it can be enjoyable to try out new products, Mike advises that most ingredients take up to six weeks to have any kind of noticeable effect. And if you have a negative reaction, it’s harder to figure out what might be causing it if you’re constantly using different products.
