This Morning sensation Alison Hammond, 45, who started out acting in pantomime productions before landing her first TV role in Big Brother in 2002, has expressed how she is “upset” for those who have been affected in the theatre industry due to the coronavirus outbreak. The ITV favourite vocalised her concerns via Twitter this morning.

It’s upsetting me now.

Alison began by writing to her 321,000 Twitter followers: “After 14 years of doing panto, I really don’t understand why it can’t go on.

“Masks are for when you can’t social distance.

“Surely everyone just wears a mask, it’s actually upsetting me now as so many people are being affected #theatre how are these people supposed to survive.”

Alison started out in pantomime productions such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Jack and the Beanstalk, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.

Shortly afterwards, many social media users weighed in on the ongoing conversation.

One replied: “Yep, I’m in the same boat. Absolutely gutted that I won’t be on stage this Christmas.

“Seeing so many theatre friends (performers, crew, normal theatre staff) lose their jobs and it’s so sad x.”

However, one person remarked: “With social distancing though would it be worth it?

“I mean, the theatres wouldn’t be making hardly any money would they with limited numbers.”

They then shared: “It’s very sad though. Plus the surely the performers wouldn’t be able to keep apart.”

Another disappointed Twitter user wrote: “If nightclubs can re-open then I don’t understand why theatres can’t too.

“I know which one will be a greater risk!!”

While Prime Minister Boris Johnson said indoor theatre performances can take place with socially distanced audiences at the beginning of August, the head of Theatres Trust said the move “will not be economically viable”.

Despite this, Jon Morgan, director of Theatres Trust welcomed this as “a step in the right direction”.

He added that “for most theatres it will not be economically viable to reopen with 30-40% audience required under social distancing”.

Elsewhere, former Strictly Come Dancing star Kevin Clifton also expressed similar concerns over the industry he hopes to return to following his exit from the BBC competition.

Back when it was announced hotels and other accommodation could open in July, Kevin told his 250,000 Twitter followers: “Holidays are nice but please can I still have a theatre career to come back to? We really need your help.”

After Kevin, who has starred in many West End productions before now, many waded in to support his plea.

One tweeted: “Well said, let’s be honest many of us like to go to the theatre on holiday – and not just for a drink.

“It’s heartbreaking for all of you who work in the theatre, but your audiences need you back as well, theatre trips help to keep us sane.”
