Jonny Brownlee has kept his personal affairs very much out of the limelight since his rise to stardom after winning the 2012 Triathlon Series.

Alongside his brother Alistair, by 2017, the competitive siblings had amassed an impressive £3.5 million fortune, according to Sunday Times Rich List, after scoring multiple wins, including a silver medal which Jonny received at the World Triathlon in Rio the year prior.

I can’t believe I am still single

However, in an unearthed interview with the Mirror, the 31-year-old previously told the publication that due to his hectic career, he’s found himself having little to no luck as far as his love life was concerned.

His gruelling training sessions have kept him apart from his family, so the idea of welcoming a relationship into his frantic life seemed almost impossible.

“I can’t believe I am still single,” he joked to the publication in 2017.

While Jonny hadn’t been so lucky as far as relationships were concerned, his brother appeared to be juggling his career with a full-on romance rather well, though marriage was not on the cards just yet for the 33-year-old.

“I have not got a girlfriend at the moment,” Jonny added at the time. “Alistair has got a girlfriend but he has not confided in me about any marriage plans.

“Every time I bring it up he just goes a bit red! All our school friends are starting to get married as well, so there have been a few weddings.”

It is unclear if the woman Alistair’s brother was gushing about in the interview is still in his life, considering the latter has made no mention of her on any of his social media accounts, nor has she ever been mentioned in any of his interviews.

Jonny added that his career remained his main priority. While he seemed relatively surprised to still be single at 27 — when the interview was conducted — he continued by mentioning that a woman who was understanding of his profession had yet to cross his path.

“I am too focused on the sport – I need a very understanding girl. I have been away so much especially with the Olympics.

“I counted up that I was out of the country for nine months last year.”

Despite being open to the idea of settling down with his future leading lady, Jonny has continued to keep his passion for sport at the forefront.

In May, Jonny made a triumphant return with his first race of the year at the Triathlon World Cup in Arzachena in Sardinia. He was joined by Alistair, who unfortunately failed to complete the contest.

The brothers had travelled to the Italian island after an intense training camp in New Mexico.

Despite extreme windy weather conditions on the day of the race, Jonny still defeated his competitors after winning the race in 54 minutes and 48 seconds, which was a tad faster than runner-up Adrien Briffod, who came in second place with 54 minutes and 52 seconds.

Jonny remains the most decorated triathlete in Olympic history, having won three Olympic medals to date. In comparison, his brother has two gold medals and is the most successful triathlete in Olympic history.

In August, in an interview with Metro, Jonny spoke candidly about his love for his sport as he touched on the goals he’d set out for himself for the coming years.

“It’s hard to leave the Olympics not enthused about the whole thing, even at a Games that was as unique as this one. I realised how much I love about the Olympic Games when we were in Tokyo,” he said.

“It may have been a very different Games but it is always amazing to be part of Team GB, even if this time I really did miss out on the whole Olympic experience. It was fly in, compete, fly out.

“My plan is to do a year of different stuff in terms of racing — there are Super League triathlons in London, Munich, Jersey and Malibu this year and I want to do some 70.3 Ironman, maybe combined with Olympic-distance events and race for the real love of it.”

Alistair and Jonny will be appearing on the BBC gameshow A Question of Sport tonight at 7.30pm.
