Laura Whitmore has been criticised for failing to correctly pronounce the name of Love Island's newest bombshell, Priya Gopaldas.

The Irish presenter was speaking of the 23 year old student nurse's upcoming arrival into the Spanish villa on Sunday night's episode of Aftersun when she erroneously pronounced Priya's name as "Prior".

The blunder was quickly picked up by frustrated viewers, with some urging the 36 year old television host to "do better" and others saying that she should not be presenting the show if she didn't know how to pronounce the name of its stars.

"@thewhitmore not being able to pronounce PRIYA :/ honestly, it's not a hard name to say, the least they could do is say ppls name #loveisland #aftersun," one person commented.

Another wrote on Twitter: "Laura Whitmore just pronounced Priya as Prior wtf has she never met a Priya.,"

A third added: "Laura Whitmore pronouncing Priya's name wrong on Aftersun is just pure laziness. Do better. #LoveIsland."

Someone else tweeted: "Laura Whitmore pronouncing 'Priya' on #LoveIsland aftersun is why I'm against Indian people being on these shows bc they'll find new ways to embarrass us and I don't want it on my TV."

Another user wrote: "In this day and age, how is Laura Whitmore mispronouncing the name Priya!?! What is Pry-yah!?!? Simple Asian name, and you can't say it right. It's even spelled phonetically? #loveIsland #loveislandaftersun."

Priya is set to heat things up upon her arrival to Love Island later this week.

Speaking ahead of her grand entrance, she said: "I'm single, and I'm looking for love and I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to take me out of my comfort zone.

"I'm nearing the end of medical school, so I've got my career on track, but now I just need a man!"

Happy to step on toes, Priya says she is "absolutely" ready for the competition aspect of finding love in the villa.
