Matt Baker: ‘I’m on it’ Alex Jones backs campaign for co-host after he quits The One Show

Matt Baker, 41, shared some emotional news with The One Show viewers during last night’s episode. The star explained he will be stepping down from his presenting role on the BBC programme in 2020 after nine years in the job. He informed fans in a tearful speech: “I would like to take this opportunity to say that at this time of year I like to stop, reflect and take stock.

“The One Show has been a massive part of my life for almost a decade now, and I have loved every second of being a part of it, but I am leaving this green sofa in the spring.

“It’s time to give someone else the opportunity to see how big-hearted and generous you, the viewers, really are.”

However, the Countryfile favourite’s co-host Alex Jones, 42, who is currently away from the show on maternity leave, seemed to suggest Matt needs more recognition for his work.

The mum-of-two responded to a Twitter user who pointed out that the TV personality “should be nominated for a knighthood” due to his charity work for Children In Need and his “dedication”.

The fan shared their opinion and called on Alex and BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker to help.

They wrote: “I’m sure I speak for so many… #Mattbaker should be nominated for a Knighthood… all the dedication and hard work… year in… year out for @BBCCiN.

“Doing the #RickshawChallenge can some one help?? @BBCCountryfile @BBCOne @MissAlexjones @mrdanwalker.”

Alex was quick to reply and voice her approval for the idea.

She wrote back in view of her 234,000 followers: “I’m on it x.”

Fans took to the comments section of Alex’s tweet to share their thoughts.

One person agreed: “I think that too. An amazingly humble and hardworking person. The empathy Matt has with everyone is visible especially during Rickshaw Challenge.”

Another added: “Alex, added onto my FB that Matt needs to be recognised for his hard work and so many people agree as well as on Twitter. Really hoping this can happen. Will miss your dynamic duo on One Show as you’re fantastic together but nothing stays the same & family more important xx.”(sic)
