Camila Cabello’s Cutout Met Gala Look Is Actually Upcycled
Camila Cabello took to the red carpet for the 2022 Met Gala in an all-white two-piece set with colorful floral details. The outfit, which was designed by Moschino, featured high-collar, strappy detailing around the chest and waist and a large bustle reminiscent of the Gilded Age, which the Met Gala theme is highlighting. She wore matching blossoms in her hair, which she kept swept up, and accessorized with gorgeous sparkling earrings. But the best part about her look was the construction.
This year’s Met Gala is a continuation of last year’s theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which aimed to celebrate iconic American designers and moments in American fashion. This gala’s shift toward “Gilded Glamour” places more of an emphasis on opulence, extravagance, and luxury, referencing an era in American history characterized by extreme economic growth and expansion.
However, for Cabello, the theme had a slightly different meaning. “I just thought of how ironic it is,” she said, discussing all the overconsumption and grandiosity during this period. “All of those things have gotten us to the climate crisis.” To that end, the outfit she’s wearing tonight was upcycled and all sustainable.
In terms of the design, although Cabello didn’t step out dripping in jewels, petticoats, or tiaras, as one might have expected on the Met Gala red carpet, there were aspects of her outfit that did seem to draw inspiration from the given time period. Her dress featured a bustle, although it appeared on the side of her dress, as opposed to the back, where it’s typically placed. You would also be hard pressed to find a Gilded Age-era dress studded with multicolored flowers, but the Met Gala red carpet is less about historical accuracy and more about creative license.
Check out the photos ahead and see what you think about Cabello’s take on Gilded Age grandeur.
