Britain’s best takeaways revealed! Humble-looking joints – including a Sheffield-based burger haunt – are crowned as country’s winners (so is YOUR local on the list?)

Britain’s best takeaways have been revealed at the Just Eat Restaurant Awards last night, with the humble-looking Sheffield-based burger bar Munchies crowned as the winner at a glitzy ceremony in London.

Regional awards also saw eleven beloved food haunts acknowledged, including East Midlands’ winner June Plum Food, loved for its modern Jamaican dishes, and Northern Ireland’s pick – Pizza Guyz.

Manchester-based Archie’s, which has locations across the UK, also got a special shoutout at the awards as a star ‘newcomer’ on the delivery app.

This year exclusively, one eatery was also praised with an Outstanding Achievement Award for its excellent service – even during times of personal hardship – after Chris’s Fish and Chips owner Strad Kyriacou embarked on a mental health course to better support both his family and his customers.

New special award categories also saw takeaways recognised by public vote.

Fast food chain Leon was hailed for its Best Breakfast, whereas Mexican-inspired burrito joint Chipotle won ‘Best Lunch’.

The public also decided that Mancunian burger brand Archie’s was Just Eat’s Best Newcomer, and that plant-based Hogless Roast provided the Best Vegan dishes.

‘The Just Eat Restaurant Awards rightly shine a spotlight on the incredible people who not only deliver unforgettable food, but go above and beyond to make an invaluable contribution to our local community and the UK economy,’ Just Eat’s Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Kenny said.

‘Despite facing sky-high inflation, soaring food and energy bills and continued staff shortages from Brexit and Covid, these restaurants have demonstrated unparalleled resilience, entrepreneurial spirit and grit.

‘Congratulations to all this year’s winners and finalists.’

Munchies – officially Britain’s Best Takeaway – was praised for not only its mouth-watering smash burgers, but also its charity work.

Owner Shafkat Khan Mohammas has been supporting local and international causes since setting up shop six years ago, most recently raising cash for Pakistan’s victims of flooding.

He has also proved to be a source of ‘unfaltering support’ for his staff, hiring dedicated cleaning staff after seeing how strained his employees were.

Elsewhere, East Midland’s June Plum Food was also recognised for its social impact.

The eatery, owned by Jodi Jenny, gives work to former local prisoners in an effort to help with skill building and re-integration to society.

Award winners are selected by a judging panel following a rigorous process comprising a public vote, written submission, and mystery shopping.

Regional winners each receive a £1,000 cash prize and a special Just Eat Restaurant Award trophy. Meanwhile, the overall ‘Best Takeaway in Britain’ winner will receive a further £5,000.

Northern Irish Pizza Guyz was also hailed for more than its tasty, fresh handcrafted food.

Owner Ciaran Kelly in his own time makes sure to give back to the community, teaching children with special needs how to make pizza.

He was also celebrated for commitment to running a sustainable business, having recently planted a thousand trees to offset the restaurant’s carbon emissions.

Special chops were also given to Other Side Fried, revered for ‘having the best vegan chicken burger’ the judges ever tasted, as they sampled London’s Favourite Dish.

The Just Eat Restaurant Awards – formerly the British Takeaway Awards – yesterday returned for their seventh year, featuring a star studded ceremony hosted by TV presenter and comedian Joel Dommett at The Londoner Hotel in Leicester Square.

The First Dates maître d – Fred Sirieix – made an appearance, as did Love Island fan favourites Tasha Ghouri and Andrew Le Page.

Fashion-guru-turned-foodie Gok Wan MBE was also snapped in attendance, as was Chef and Great British Menu judge, Andi Oliver; and Michelin-trained, TikTok sensation Poppy O’Toole.
