Throw an amazing gender reveal party on the cheap with our top tips

WITH a rise in pregnancies from lockdown, some couples will now be preparing for gender reveal parties.

But these events can be expensive, costing on average £91 to host.

Here are some DIY ideas that can help you have a fun and thrifty celebration . . .

Clever cakes: Clips on Facebook and Instagram have shown mums-to-be slicing into a neutral cake to reveal a colour, usually pink or blue, announcing the sex of their new baby. To make your own for a fraction of a professional baker’s price, simply add a few drops of pink or blue colouring to the batter from your favourite sponge recipe to get the desired hue. You could even make an ombre effect if you’re layering, depending on how many drops you add to each layer. Once baked, assemble and cover in icing to keep the result hidden. Or do cupcakes that reveal the gender when bitten into.

Non-pricey pinata: These are great fun. To make your own pinata use a cheap lantern — eBay has various brilliant options from around £1.69.

Fill it with coloured confetti and seal with tissue paper at the top, hang up and it’s ready to hit.

Bargain balloon: Popping balloons for the big reveal is great fun but can cost around £20 for a personalised option.

For a cheaper alternative, grab one large balloon — I like the White Jumbo Biodegradable Latex Balloon, £2.19 at partyrama.co.uk. Use a cardboard tube or water bottle top to funnel in red or blue tissue paper cut into one-inch squares. Add glitter if you want.

Inflate with helium (£20 canisters from theworks.co.uk last ages), tie off the balloon, add a ribbon and that’s that!

Flaming good: Candles are a cute, cosy option. Have all your friends light plain white candles around you, or even tea lights (grab 100 at Wilko for £2.50), passing the flame down the line. Then you light a colour-changing candle — I like those sold on etsy.co.uk for £7 — for a magical reveal.
