Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes still 'dangerous' and will improve later in F1 season amid struggles, fear rivals Red Bull | The Sun

RED BULL chief Helmut Marko fears the potential of Mercedes after proving their speed in recent weeks.

Drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have had a torrid time behind the wheel this season with just three podium finishes between them.

Problems with the car surrounding speed and stability have made winning impossible and resulted in Mercedes trailing Red Bull by 101 points in the Constructors' Championship.

But Red Bull advisor believes a Mercedes revival is on the cards after recording fast laps in recent weeks.

He told Formel1.de: “Mercedes is doing incredibly fast laps in practice and also in the races, both with Hamilton and Russell.

“Not continuously, so for us it’s difficult to interpret where that lap time is coming from. Listening closely to the Mercedes people, I don’t think they know either.

“But the dangerous thing is the potential seems to be there. And once that can be called up over a race distance, then they’ll be right up there or right at the front.

"It’s really incredibly hard to understand where this [car is] incredibly fast. They were the fastest in the field at [one] stage, but it doesn’t last long.

“What exactly changes there, why they can’t drive that continuously, is just – thank God – still the problem, I would say.”

The persistent problems mean it could take a few more races for Mercedes to be competitive at the front of the race.
