Matt Chapman's Good, Bad and Ugly from this week's world of horse racing

IT was another dramatic weekend of action with Buveur D'Air getting beat and De Rasher Counter landing the Ladbrokes Trophy.

But who or what has made my latest Good Bad Ugly column?

GOOD

Take a bow Emma Lavelle, who came of age at the weekend with a huge double at Newbury thanks to Paisley Park and De Rasher Counter.

Don't get me wrong, Lavelle and her partner Barry Fenton have banged in many a big winner in their time, but Emma has slightly bubbled away beneath the surface, promising much without always everything going on as she might have hoped.

In the brilliant Stayers' Hurdle winner Paisley Park, Lavelle has nurtured a horse's career in sensational style, bringing him quietly through the ranks. And with De Rasher Counter she has shown she can get one ready for a big day.

This weekend might just pave the way for more owners – big owners – to come Lavelle's way, and her talent certainly deserves that.

Many people will have got involved in the latest 10-to-follow competition which started on Saturday.

I had Champ and Paisley Park in my list, who both won on Friday, and as such neither success counted for the prize.

I also have Lady Buttons and Buveur d'Air in my ten, who both failed to win the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle.

It's fair to say the prize will not be mine! But I wish you all well.

At first sight it looked as though Barry Geraghty and Buveur d'Air had a shocker in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle, but when pictures emerged of a piece of wood in the Nicky Henderson star's leg it soon became obvious that was not the case.

Buveur d'Air has two Champion Hurdle victories to his name, but in many ways he has been an easy horse to knock.

There have been many occasions when we have had to make excuses for him. Saturday was not one.

We will never know what pain Buveur d'Air went through at the weekend, but we can be pretty sure he felt something nasty.

In many ways this was one of his most courageous efforts he has put up so far. Get well soon son.
