Abuse dished out to certain players has been an unfortunate running theme of the 2023 World Darts Championship so far.
A number of players have been the target of unflattering chants and boos in matches, including world number Gerwyn Price during his first round victory over Luke Woodhouse.
One particular chant featured another Welsh sporting hero. “You’re just a s*** Gareth Bale” chanted a significant section of the crowd at Price at the Ally Pally. The chant was audible enough for Sky Sports to turn down the volume on their coverage.

Another Welsh player, Robert Owen, was also targeted during his defeat to Andrew Gilding. The abuse left Owen’s partner, Robyn, shocked.
“It was my daughter that made me aware of it. I just couldn't get over the language/inappropriate chants, especially when there were loads of kids in the arena,” she said, reported dartsnews.com.
“I can see why there’s restricted age limits in all the other tournaments now. Won't be taking them again in a hurry.”
Robyn also took to Twitter to add: “Also shouting chants about him being disabled.”

Sadly, Price is no stranger to abuse from fans at the Ally Pally. Speaking after his win over Woodhouse, he admitted the stage could be a toxic environment for non-English players.
“It [crowd abuse] always affects me,” he confessed. “I try not to react, like I have in previous years, and contain myself.
“It’s difficult playing against any player. When the crowd are on the your back, it’s extra difficult. The majority of the fans and the players in this tournament are English so you’re going to get it. It’s just about how well you can deal with it.”
Price can expect the crowd to be against him again when he faces fans’ favourite Raymond van Barneveld in a blockbuster third round tie after Christmas.
