Tottenham fans in uproar as the club BANS their iconic ‘Spurs Cyprus’ flag for being ‘political’ – even though it has been displayed at home and away matchdays for 15 YEARS without any issues

  • Tottenham fans are in uproar over a decision to ban an iconic supporter flag
  • Spurs Cyprus Flag has travelled England and beyond for over 15 years
  • However, the club has banned the flag because they say it is ‘political’
  • Fans have hit out at the ‘disgraceful’ decision and a petition has been launched

Furious Tottenham Hotspur fans have blasted the Premier League club after an iconic flag was banned for being ‘political’.

Athos, Alex and Chris Kyriacou have accused the football club of ‘discrimination’ after they were informed that their ‘Spurs Cyprus’ flag is ‘political’ and has been permanently banned from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Spurs fans have taken the flag across England and beyond for over 15 years and it has regularly been on display at the club’s new ground as well as their old stadium, White Hart Lane.

Tottenham fans are in uproar after the club banned an iconic flag for being ‘political’

Spurs Cyprus Flag has travelled the country and beyond following the team for over 15 years

However, the Premier League club says that it can no longer be displayed as it is ‘political’

But in a statement posted on Twitter on Friday, the supporters hit out at the club’s ‘nonsense’ rationale after revealing that they have been told the flag is no longer allowed inside the stadium.

‘Spurs have informed us that we are no longer allowed to bring the Spurs Cyprus Flag into the stadium anymore and that it is permanently banned from being brought inside,’ the statement read.

‘The reason they gave us, is that the flag is ‘a political’ flag and political flags are not permitted inside the stadium.

‘This reason is complete and utter nonsense. The Cyprus flag is 100% NOT a political flag. We have had this flag up for 15+ years… and not had a single problem. Now all of a sudden it’s ‘a political’ flag and is no longer allowed inside.

Chris (L), Alex (2L), Athos (2R) and Charlie (R) run an Instagram account with the flag. In a statement posted on social media on Friday, fans learnt of the club’s decision

‘We have been part of the furniture for years and many fans describe the flag as “iconic”. Everyone loves it. No one has a problem with the flag.’

The statement went onto accuse the club of ‘lying’ and that they ‘no longer care about us fans’.

‘This is discrimination and we are truly hurt by the treatment of the club,’ it continued. ‘They are sucking the life out of us.’

The supporters have launched a petition to ‘Get the Spurs Cyprus Flag back at Tottenham’, which has thus far garnered 288 signatures.

Furious supporters labelled Spurs a ‘joke’ and lambasted the ‘disgraceful’ decision

Fellow Tottenham fans responded furiously to the news that the beloved flag would no longer feature at home games.

‘Absolute disgrace,’ one fan said. ‘Just look through many of the iconic photos of the stadium(s) over the last 15 years and you’ll find it in 90% of them.’

Another said: ‘Used to love seeing this flag in the corner of the Paxton. It really is part of the furniture. Absolutely awful decision by the club.’

A third fan added: ‘This is really ridiculous, in no way is the Cypriot flag political, it’s a flag of a country. Not surprised tho [sic] with the club.’

The national flag of Cyprus features the shape of the island in its entirety, along with two olive branches to signify the peace between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

SPURS CYPRUS FLAG STATEMENT IN FULL

We are extremely upset to share this news. Many of you have been asking us why our flag has not been up recently.  Spurs have informed us that we are no longer allowed to bring the Spurs Cyprus Flag into the stadium anymore and that it is permanently banned from being brought inside.

The reason they gave us, is that the flag is ‘a political’ flag and political flags are not permitted inside the stadium. This reason is complete and utter nonsense. The Cyprus flag is 100% NOT a political flag. We have had this flag up for 15+ years inside White Hart Lane and now the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and not had a single problem. Now all of a sudden it’s ‘a political’ flag and is no longer allowed inside. We have been part of the furniture for years and many fans describe the flag as “iconic”. Everyone loves it. No one has a problem with the flag.

They are not telling us the truth in their reasoning and are lying to us. We as fans are being lied to. The club no longer care about us fans. We have been season ticket holders for 20+ years and travel to every game home and away and across Europe spending thousands each year supporting the club we love. And this is the way we get treated.

This is discrimination and we are truly hurt by the treatment of the club. They are sucking the life out of us. We are a cash cow. This is not a football club. This is a business. We have created a petition and will include it in our next tweet. We hope that as many of you as possible can sign it and share it across social media and with your friends and family to help us get the flag back in the stadium.

Many thanks.
