Friday night’s car crash in Kansas City was not the first time the son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has faced issues off the field.

Britt Reid — the linebackers coach for the Chiefs — is under investigation for driving impaired after he was involved in a multi-vehicle crash that left a 5-year-old child facing life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Reid told an officer he had between 2-3 drinks and was on a prescription for Adderall, according to KSHB.

The 35-year-old will remain home and reportedly hospitalized in Kansas City while Andy Reid is expected to fly to Tampa Bay on Saturday and coach against the Buccaneers in Super Bowl 2021.

No charges were filed as of Saturday afternoon. The younger Reid has “multiple prior DUI contacts,” according to a search warrant obtained and published by Fox4 in Missouri.

Reid and his late brother Garrett Reid first ran into legal trouble in January 2007. Later that year, while handing out sentencing, a Pennsylvania judge described a “family in crisis” living in a home that was a “drug emporium.”

Reid was sentenced to 8-23 months in jail plus five months probation on gun and drug charges, including pleading guilty to a felony for carrying a firearm without a license. He pointed a handgun at another driver following a dispute.

While in jail on the road-rage charges, Reid was charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance and drug possession stemming from a separate incident where he drove into a shopping cart in a parking lot while out on bail. He ultimately served six months on the two charges and was paroled upon acceptance into a drug treatment program, according to reports at the time.

Soon after his release, Reid began a coaching career that included an internship under his father on the Eagles’ staff and two years at Temple. When Andy Reid was fired by the Eagles and hired by the Chiefs in 2013, Reid accompanied his father and has worked his way to outside linebackers coach.

Now, with the Chiefs having spent the week leading up to Super Bowl LV practicing in Kansas City, Reid told police he had two or three drinks and was on prescription Adderall before the crash near the team’s practice facility. An officer noted the “smell of a moderate amount of alcoholic beverages emanating” from Reid, whose “eyes were bloodshot and red.” The two injured children — one suffered minor injuries — were in the backseat of a car parked along a highway ramp to provide assistance to another disabled car, reports said.

Reid is one of four surviving children – two sons and two daughters – in the Reid family.

Garrett Reid, who was arrested on the same day as his younger brother in 2007, died at age 29 from an accidental drug overdose during Eagles training camp at Lehigh University in 2012.

Garrett first entered drug rehab in 2003, according to ESPN. Four years later, he was involved in a high-speed car crash that led to police discovering heroin and more than 200 pills in his car. Authorities said Garrett tried to smuggle drugs into jail while serving his sentence.

By June 2010, Reid was living clean and free, Philly.com reported. At the time of his death, Garrett was assisting the Eagles’ strength and conditioning program in an unofficial capacity.

After the Chiefs won the Super Bowl last year, Andy Reid said of his late son, “You can’t help but think of him. Absolutely.”

Reid’s youngest son, Spencer, worked as a Chiefs strength and conditioning intern in 2018 and now holds a full-time position in the Colorado State athletics department.
