WARNING: This article contains full spoilers for Dune.
Dune tells the epic story of the Atreides family taking control of Arrakis to harvest the spice, Melange, for the unseen Emperor. The final moments of the film leave a number of questions unanswered that will likely continue into the second half of the story. Until then, read what happened at the end of Dune: Part One.
What happened at the end of Dune?
Dune’s ending showed Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) finally being saved by the Fremen.
Before that, one of the Fremen, Jamis, was not happy with how Lady Jessica disarmed Stilgar (Benicio Del Toro). He called her a witch for being a Bene Gesserit and demanded a trial by combat.
Paul stepped into battle on Lady Jessica’s behalf, where he fought diligently against the warrior.
Paul eventually bested Jamis, killing him in the process, and continued on his way with the rest of the Fremen.
In the final scenes of the film, Paul was told by Chani (Zendaya) that “this is just the beginning”.
Paul then looked over the deserts of Dune and saw a Fremen warrior pull out two hooks before jumping on the back of a Shai-Hulud (better known as a sandworm).
This scene is teasing that Paul will have a long, complicated life going forward with the Fremen now that he has run away to the desert.
Paul’s fate was left hanging in the balance after the Harkonnens killed nearly all of his family and took over Arrakis.
With the help of the Emperor’s specialised warriors, the Sardaukar, the Atreides tribe were murdered, leaving just Paul and Lady Jessica alive – as well as Jessica’s unborn child.
Thankfully, Paul does have an advantage over the Harkonnens.
After ingesting some spice while hiding out in the desert, Paul gained a limited amount of prescience.

Paul’s ability to see into the near future allows him to know what is going to happen before it does.
This power showed him his romance with Chani long before he met her.
It also showed him a death would occur during a fight with Jamis.
With his new power of prescience, and a new collection of allies in the Fremen, he has all he needs to take on the Harkonnens in the future.
At the moment Dune: Part Two has not yet been confirmed by Warner Bros Studios or Legendary Pictures.
However, director Denis Villeneuve has already confirmed he will be fighting for a second film in the franchise.
Dune is in cinemas now.
