Fans react as next Star Wars trilogy confirmed for Game of Thrones showrunners
A long time ago in the Seven Kingdoms far far away.
Or something like that.
The next Star Wars trilogy after the end of the Skywalker saga – coming with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker later this year – has already been confirmed with three release dates from Disney , but now we know who will be bringing us the trilogy.
Off the back of the most divisive episode in Game of Thrones history with The Bells which saw the character of Daenerys Targaryen make some questionable choices, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the HBO series' showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be the ones to bring us the new Star Wars trilogy.
"The Benioff and Weiss series will be the next Star Wars movies released," Iger said at the Moffett Nathanson Media & Communications Summit, according to ComingSoon.net .
Nicknamed "D and D" by fans of the television series, the pair have a somewhat mixed relationship with fans, but given the huge success of the HBO show, it is unlikely to be of much concern to Disney how the end of Game of Thrones is received.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously said: "David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."
Nonetheless, quite the reaction on social media has ensued at the confirmation of their involvement.
One user on Twitter said:" I was enjoying everyone's GoT chat for once until I found out about the Star Wars movie and now I'm just sad again"
"Told y’all Beinoff & Weiss were rushing out the door for Star Wars," said another user.
"In light of the tepid reception of Season 8 of #GameofThrones, I think delaying the announcement of Benioff & Weiss' involvement with Star Wars would have been smart" concluded another.
Another tweeted: "D&D are going to execute order 66 in Star Wars Universe after slaughtering all Game of Thrones characters"
Fans of Game of Thrones, meanwhile, await the final episode of the fantasy series, but things are looking divisive.
Some are excited for their work on Star Wars, however.
"I am so excited to see what they have in store!! I hope this trilogy is a bit darker than how we’ve normally seen #StarWars but I hope it still is filled with good humor and that magical experience like the original trilogy."
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released on December 19, 2019.
