Simon Cowell brands David Walliams desperate in Britains Got Talent dig

It seems tensions are already brewing behind the scenes in the Britain's Got Talent judges' box – as Simon Cowell couldn't help but take a swipe at his fellow judge David Walliams.

Gathering for a Q&A ahead of the new series launch this weekend, Simon branded his co-star "desperate" in a cheeky jibe which saw David later admit he was "angry" with his co-stars.

Speaking to Daily Star and other press, a tiff erupted as David accused Simon of trying to "copy" him.

Asked about their various judging styles, David explained: "I think Simon is trying to copy me, because he realised I was very popular being the nice one and being the funny one.

"So now he is constantly trying to be nice all the time – and it is really really irritating!"

But Amanda Holden was quick to console Simon – and probably for the best, as she was invited round to his house in Malibu.

She told the BGT boss: "David's just bitter because you're funnier than David now!"

Simon couldn't help but escalate things, as he referred to David's "desperate" attempts to score award wins after various nominations.

He holds two National Television Awards for Most Popular TV Judge for his BGT work, and has been nominated for a third.

Simon giggled: "Possibly, yeah. Also, I don’t do a whole campaign when I’m nominated for one of these judges awards – which is what I’ve seen him do!

"He never stops telling his followers to vote for him. I mean, that’s desperate."

Amanda cheekily chimed in: "You forget about the pile of books he’s got under his desk that he gives out to people – whether they want them or not. They’re signed, they’re ready!"

"They're sort of thrown at people now," Simon agreed.

Things didn't simmer down then, either, as David interjected: "Can I just say I’m really annoyed that Amanda is in Simon’s home in Malibu? I’m so angry about this I can’t even think straight!"

Which is when Simon decided to tell David off about his choice of backdrop – which included plenty of cans of Diet Coke in what looked to be a mini-fridge.

He swiped: "Thanks for taking such an effort with your backdrop – I can tell you’re taking this really seriously!"

Amanda giggled: "It looks like a vending machine!"

But it seems the foursome are already on top form, as Simon admitted they laugh together every day of filming.

He confessed: "The truth is that you know you’ve got a good group around you when you can argue without feeling bad about arguing. So, in other words, when we disagree – and we do a lot – it’s not uncomfortable.

"That’s when you know it’s a fun thing, otherwise it’s really bad. If you don’t laugh in a day there is an issue.

"That's probably what we do more than anything else on the show – particularly me, because I can’t stop laughing at all the wrong times. And even though they’re long days, you feel good afterwards."
