The Co-Creator of 'Parks and Recreation' Reveals Who Leslie Knope Would Vote for in the 2020 Election
Parks and Recreation ran for seven seasons on NBC with its series finale airing on Feb. 24, 2015. The workplace comedy starred Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope, a hardworking bureaucrat in the Parks and Recreation Department in the fictional Pawnee, Indiana.
The show incorporated local and national politics into its story lines as Poehler’s Parks and Recreation character, Leslie, rose through the ranks of government. Michael Schur, the co-creator of Parks and Recreation, recently revealed who Leslie would vote for in the upcoming 2020 election. Shockingly, it’s not Joe Biden.
Leslie Knope loved Vice President Joe Biden in ‘Parks and Recreation’
In a running joke, Leslie had an obsession with Vice President Joe Biden in Parks and Recreation. He was her ultimate crush, and in later seasons of the show she met him on multiple occasions. In an interview with Buzzfeed News, Schur explained why Poehler’s character loved Biden so much.
“I think her love of Joe Biden came from two things: Number one, she was, like, rapaciously, sexually attracted to him. And number two, he had this really kind of plainspoken … ‘man of the people’ quality,’” Schur said.
In 2014, Schur explained the origin of Leslie’s love of Biden.
“It was a very casual joke pitched in the writers room one day a long time ago,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “It just sort of took hold, and once you give a writers room a bone like that, they are just going to chew it forever.”
Michael Schur does not think Leslie would vote for Joe Biden
In 2019, Parks and Recreation fans began to wonder who Leslie would hypothetically vote for in the upcoming 2020 election. Shocking Parks and Recreation fans, Schur does not think Leslie would vote for Biden.
“I don’t know what Leslie would think about him now, but, you know, I think she would still admire a lot of his sort of roll-up-your-shirtsleeves, fight-for-people kind of attitude,” Schur said.
Instead, Schur thinks Leslie would vote for Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren.
“But I also think that Elizabeth Warren would be setting Leslie Knope’s hair on fire right now,” he said.
Schur explained why, saying, “Elizabeth Warren not only, I think, aligns with a lot of what Leslie believed in about the ability of the government when it’s functioning well to affect people’s lives for the better, but her whole thing is ‘I’m not just orating here, I’ve got a plan,’”
Amy Poehler had a different answer about her ‘Parks and Recreation’ character
In March 2019, Poehler told Variety who Leslie might consider voting for in the 2020 election. This interview took place before Schur’s interview with Buzzfeed News and before Biden announced his 2020 run.
“Who’s the candidate that’s closest, like the Midwest candidate? Maybe Amy Klobuchar,” Poehler said.
Poehler also speculated that Leslie might like Pete Buttigieg, who happens to be an Indiana native like Poehler’s fictional character.
“She might like that underdog status of him,” she said.
