The Spy season 2 Netflix release date: Will there be another series?
The true story of Eli Cohen (played by Sacha Baron Cohen) and his espionage work in Syria during the 1960s was the inspiration for Netflix Original series The Spy. The action-packed first season was released on the streaming service on Friday, September 6 and, with only six episodes, many fans have already binge-watched the entire thing. While Eli’s story came to a close on The Spy, the series ended on an almighty cliffhanger which prompts the question: Will there be a season two?
Will there be another series of The Spy?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Spy on Netflix.
Eli’s four-year tenure in Syria as an undercover Mossad agent played out over all six episodes.
His story came to a brutal end in the finale as he was publicly executed by President Al-Hafez (Waleed Zuaiter).
On the face of things, it would seem this provided a definite end to The Spy and another series was less than likely to come to fruition.
However, in the final moments of the last episode, there was a cliffhanger which could lead to more episodes.
Sometime after Eli’s death, his handler Dan Peleg (Noah Emmerich) is back in the same building he first met Eli.
This time, however, he’s putting a new potential agent through his paces.
The unnamed man enters Dan’s office and the series ends.
While nothing is known about this agent, it does open the door for The Spy to explore another story.
However, as of yet, Netflix hasn’t renewed The Spy for another series.
It has also been labelled as a limited series, which, again, doesn’t look good for any future seasons.
Express.co.uk has contacted Netflix for comment regarding season two of The Spy.
For those wanting to know more about the aftermath of Eli’s death, Netflix provided an update in the closing credits.
It is revealed that Eli’s body was left on display in the centre of Damascus for six hours after being publicly hanged.
Despite numerous efforts by Israel and Eli’s family, his body still remains in Syria.
His wife Nadia, who is played by Hadar Ratzon Rotem in the series, has continued to campaign for his remains to be returned to his family.
Despite his execution taking place over five decades ago, Eli’s wife never remarried.
The Spy is available to stream on Netflix now.
