Tiger King was both a popular and controversial Netflix series with it first premiering near the start of 2020. The show was led by Joe Exotic, the enigmatic zoo owner with a penchant for rare big cats. Opposing him was Carole Baskin, who ultimately succeeded in shutting his zoo down and seeing Exotic go to prison. With season two out now, Baskin is still staying true to her mission of protecting animals today.
Where is Carole Baskin now?
Tiger King was known for its chaotic events, instantly memorable characters, and of course, the rivalry between Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin.
Season one ended with Exotic losing his zoo and being sentenced to 22 years in prison for his involvement in a murder-for-hire plot and animal abuse.
Once Exotic was taken away from the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park, better known as Tiger King Park, Baskin took over.
After season one, the series star has been restoring the zoo and uncovering more secrets it has to offer.
Most of this journey has been catalogued in Carole Baskin’s Cage Match, a new series that recently premiered on Discovery+.
The show sees Carole recount the events of Tiger King season one from her perspective while she takes control of Exotic’s old animal park.
Some of this journey will also be seen in season two of Tiger King, which will also follow Exotic’s continued attempts at bringing her down.
However, despite being catapulted into stardom by season one, Baskin continues her mission to protect animals and stop abusers.
Yet, the coronavirus pandemic had a major impact on her business – Big Cat Rescue.
The company lost over $1 million during the pandemic, leading Baskin to pursue her newfound celebrity status even further.
Baskin made an appearance on Dancing With the Stars, the USA’s answer to Strictly Come Dancing.
She made it to week three in the competition, dancing to such cat-themed hits as Eye of the Tiger and What’s New Pussycat?
Speaking to The Guardian about her time on the dancing series, Baskin said: “It showed people that I am willing to take on anything, regardless of how ill-equipped I may be for it.
“And that I’ll do it with grace and good humour.”
Yet, Baskin’s first and foremost concern continues to be the wellbeing of big cats.
Regardless, Baskin is still unhappy with the content and angle of Tiger King season one.
The star took issue with the dramatisation of the show and its focus on Joe Exotic.
Baskin continued: “At the end of it, I just sat there with my [current] husband, looking at each other, like: ‘What was that?’ Such a missed opportunity.
“Because there was so much they could have shown people about the egregious abuse that these animals suffer.
“Instead, they just glamorised this yahoo in Oklahoma and tried to create a feud. I’ve never even spoken to Joe Exotic. I’ve seen him in person I think four times.”
Tiger King seasons 1-2 are available to watch exclusively on Netflix.
