A cyclist had a lucky escape when a runaway vehicle began rolling towards them before hitting a barrier and ‘flipping’ onto a seafront promenade.

Dramatic images, taken today, show the smashed-up vehicle on its roof in Blackpool, Lancashire, after plunging around 20ft.

Police say the black Audi A3 was empty and began rolling towards the promenade, near to the famous Blackpool Tower, because the owner had forgotten to apply the handbrake.

Officers say the car then hit a railing, causing the car to ‘flip’ over the barrier.

It then landed on its roof on the promenade below.

Lancashire Police say a cyclist suffered ‘very minor’ injuries in the incident, which took place around 11am today.

It is not clear if the cyclist was standing near to the barrier or on the promenade below at the time.

However, a spokesperson for Lancashire Police said it was ‘very lucky’ that the promenade was not as busy as usual, due to the coronavirus lockdown.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said it was ‘lucky’ that the promenade was not as busy as usual, due to the coronavirus lockdown

The spokesperson said: ‘It is very lucky because on a normal Bank Holiday it would have been busy there.

‘Had it been a normal day it could have been a very different situation.’

One onlooker said: ‘The car rolled down a hill, straight over the tram tracks, then through the railings down onto the lower promenade.’

The damaged car was later recovered by a truck and taken away.
