Teenager dies, two injured in Christmas Day beach tragedy
A 19-year-old man has died, and another two were in hospital on Sunday night after a Christmas Day beach tragedy near Lorne on the Great Ocean Road.
Police said two young men tried to assist, but all three found themselves struggling in waters on Victoria’s south-west coast shortly before 6pm.
The group made it to shore, but collapsed on the beach, according to Victoria Police.
An off-duty doctor, surf lifesavers and police performed CPR and first aid before paramedics arrived.
The 19-year-old St Albans man died at the scene while a second man was airlifted to Royal Melbourne hospital in a serious condition.
Police said another young man was taken to a local hospital, and his condition wasn’t known.
The young men were all body surfing near the mouth of the Cumberland River, just south of Lorne, according to Victoria Police.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
