Wayfair slammed by customers for 'displaying white supremacy book in coffee table ad'
SHOPPERS on Wayfair were shocked to see a coffee table listed on the website decorated with a book that appears to read “WHITE SUPREMACY” down the spine.
A Twitter user posted screenshots from the retail website, which shows a wood-topped rectangular coffee table.
On the table’s surface rest a decorative bowl and a white-and-grey book, which has the words “WHITE SUPREMACY” down the side.
“Shopping for a coffee table and what Wayfair,” reads the Twitter caption.
The tweet rapidly garnered thousands of retweets and over 26k likes.
In the second photo, the cover of the book is visible, and it appears to match that of the 2011 book State of White Supremacy: Racism, Governance, and the United States.
By Friday morning, the table with the offending decor was no longer listed on Wayfair’s website.
Clicking the original link to the item redirects to the search results for “coffee table.”
Reactions on Twitter ranged from baffled to furious.
“Time to start firing some of your designers,” wrote one user.
“I absolutely thought this wasn’t real,” said another, until she clicked the link to the item page. “ @Wayfair y’all wanna explain this one?”
The Sun reached out to Wayfair and is awaiting comment. The company has not yet posted a statement in response to the backlash on social media.
Wayfair made headlines last summer for a series of rumors circulating Twitter and Reddit, which claimed the company used its WFX Utility collection as a front for human trafficking.
The furniture retailer denied the rumors, and renamed those products, also creating updated product descriptions to clarify the pricing and functionality.
Wayfair released its first diversity, equity and inclusion report earlier this year.
