WORLD ‘HAS 40% CHANCE OF TEMPORARILY REACHING 1.5C THRESHOLD’

A new climate update warns the odds of the world experiencing global annual temperatures that are 1.5C above pre-industrial levels in one of the next five years are increasing with time.

The report published by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) also warns of a very high likelihood – a 90 per cent chance – of at least one year between 2021 and 2025 becoming the warmest on record, outstripping 2016’s record heat.

Global average temperatures of 1.5C above 19th century levels are seen as a threshold beyond which the most dangerous impacts of climate change will be felt.

    WHAT ARE UV LEVELS?

Ultraviolet is a form of electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light

Ultraviolet light is what is responsible for giving you tans and sunburns.

Small amounts of UV exposure can be beneficial as it is essential in the production of vitamin D, however over exposure of UV can lead to serious health issues.

A UV index forecast identifies the strength of the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun at a particular place on a particular day.

The index provided by the Met Office allows you to take the necessary precautions to help reduce the impact of UV on your health.

    LOADS OF SUN

Met forecaster Grahame Madge said: "It's going to get noticeably warmer over the next few days.

"We're in for much clearer conditions with prolonged spells of sunshine.

"We could see temperatures rise to 25C by Monday.

"The best of the sunshine will be in London but temperatures will still be above 20C elsewhere.

"These are average for the time of year but after the month we've just had the contrast is going to be striking."

    WETTEST MAY

The UK has seen its fifth wettest May on record with 4.35in (110.5mm). The worst saw 5in (128.4mm) in 1967.

    MILLIONS ON ROADS… MORE

RAC patrol of the year Ben Aldous said: "With Covid restrictions gradually lifting and some better weather on the horizon at last, we’re anticipating large numbers of drivers to be venturing out and about over the Bank Holiday weekend.

"People now have more confidence to drive to see friends and family safely.

“Our research points to Saturday and Monday being the busiest days, but in reality, there’s a good chance the weather will have the final say as to how busy the roads get.

"A return to more typical late May temperatures and an end to the recent wind and rain could spark a sudden surge in journeys and mean some routes – especially those to the coasts and hills – start to clog up."

    RNLI BUSY SUMMER

The RNLI is preparing for its busiest Summer ever – with an anticipated 30 million expected to head to the country's 245 beaches.

Spokesman Gareth Morrison said: "We want people to enjoy the coast but urge everyone to respect the water, think about their own safety and know what to do in an emergency.

"Our main advice is to visit a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags.

"RNLI lifeguards will be patrolling around 245 beaches this summer to offer advice on how to stay safe and they are also there to help anyone who gets into trouble.

"In a normal year, around 140 people lose their lives accidentally at the coast and we know that more than half of those never intended to be in the water."

There is more than a 40 per cent chance that the annual average global temperature in at least one of the next five years will temporarily reach 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

That's according to a new climate update published today, led by the UK Met Office and issued by the World Meteorological Organisation.

In 2020 – one of the three warmest years on record – the global average temperature was 1.2C above the pre-industrial baseline, according to WMO.

It highlighted the acceleration in climate change indicators like rising sea levels, melting sea ice, and extreme weather, as well as worsening impacts on socio-economic development.

ONSHORE BREEZE FOR COASTAL AREAS OVER BANK HOLIDAY

If you are off to the seaside this weekend, there will be an onshore breeze for east coast Britain, more of an easterly for the Channel Islands.

The sea is still cold, only 9C to 11C, reports Netweather TV.

As the weekend progresses a southerly wind picks up for western Britain and Ireland which allows the temperatures to leap up for Moray.

There is warmth for inland northern England and the Midlands on Sunday but beware of the forecast temperatures on Monday.

The southeastern half of the UK still looks like staying fine and warm. Just in time for half term.
